Guzman-Larios in the works for April

Super bout would be first under Guzman's new contract

Joan Guzman has been the WBO champion at 122 pounds for sometime now, but he hasn’t been highly recognized in the boxing world, due to long stretches of inactivity. That was then, this is now. With a new manger, Jose Nunez, by his side Joan Guzman was able to acquire a promotional contract that he feels puts him in the same league as the legendary Prince Naseem Hamed. Guzman (#3 in the Boxingtalk ratings) has signed a multi-year promotional contract with Sycuan Ringside Promotions for an undisclosed amount of money. Sources close to Team Guzman say that “Sycuan Ringside Promotions is paying Joan like a heavyweight and he is receiving the biggest paycheck of any junior featherweight in history." Joan claims that members of Sycuan Ringside Promotions treated him more like family than just a simple business deal. The signing of this contract, which reportedly guarantees Guzman several bouts a year, has left the boxer with nothing but smiles.

While being under the management of Rafael Guerrero, Guzman wasn’t able to accomplish any of the things that he has done so far this year. In less than two months, Nunez, his manager, has already been able to get Guzman what he says is the best deal of any junior featherweight of our time. To top things off, Nunez has already gotten Guzman an April 9th unification bout against Oscar Larios on the Barrera under card. This match will take place in El Paso, Texas and will be televised on HBO. Guzman has already began training for this bout with his trainer Francisco Guzman, whom he has had a very close relationship with and Orlando Carrasquillo, a pads specialist who has worked with some of the quickest hands in the boxing industry. Also hired was “Scooter” Honig, a conditioner and nutritionist who has worked with the likes of WBA champion Vivian Harris, Jameel McClaine, undisputed champion Zab Judah and is currently the personal trainer to LL Cool J. With a victory against Larios, Guzman will be recognized as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.
