Grady Brewer targeting an October return

GL: It's been a while since we've had you on Boxingtalk. The last time we spoke you were recovering from surgery. What's the latest and greatest and when can we expect you back in the ring? "I'm expecting to get back out there on October 16. The knee is doing a little bit better. It's still not where I want it to be at, but it's been too long and I've got to get back in action. I'm really training hard and I'm going to get a fight or two while I continue to get things right."

GL: After going your whole career having boxing as a part time gig, you finally get the chance to focus on boxing full time, you become the Contender champion and just when you're really ready to get it going, you suffer and injury. Has that been as difficult to deal with as any of the hardships you went through prior to getting into this position?

Grady Brewer: "I'll tell you what, you took the words right out of my mouth. I finally got the opporunity to step on through and shine, and I've suffered injuries the whole way here, it's just that they've been the kind of injuries that I can overcome. Finally I win the contender and I get my name known and I'm ready to fight the big name fighters on my terms and suffering the injury when I did make it a little harder to get through my everyday life."

GL: Will your first fight back come against a safe opponent so you can see where you're knee is at?

GB: "Yes. Normally when I'm getting in there it's at the last minute or not in my best interest, now I want to be pampered a little bit. No doubt, but I've got the heart so I'm willing to go in there with whoever, but for the first one I would like to get somebody I can put in work with."

GL: Mora is fighting Ouma, Forbes is fighting Bojado, Manfredo has fought with Calzaghe, Gomez with Gatti. Who do you see yourself having that kind of fight against?

GB: "I'd like to get a fight with Joshua Clottey. I've seen him fight and I've seen his performances. I'd like to get a part of all of them. Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather.

GL: Are you moving down to welterweight?

GB: "I don't think I'm making 147 but maybe we can do something at 154."

GL: You were mentioned for a fight with Vernon Forrest prior to the injury. Is he still someone you're interested in getting it on with?

GB: "I was going to fight, but things were not right on my end at the time, but to answer your question, I would love to fight him."

GL: When will you have more details about your return?

GB: "Any day now. I'm waiting to hear back from Jeff Wald to give me the venue, the opponent and my purse."

GL: If you're fighting in October, I imagine you're already in the gym. How has the knee responded?

GB: "I haven't put any running pressure on it, but I'm confident that I'll be ready to go in October."

GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?

GB: "Keep your eyes open for me, I'll be coming back soon and I'll be better than ever."
