Stops Damgaard with injured right

In Atlantic City, Arturo Gatti fought through an injured hand to stop a valiant but limited Thomas Damgaard by eleventh-round technical knockout. In his first bout at welterweight sine losing to Oscar De La Hoya several years ago, Gatti showed his true warrior spirit when he finished off Damgaard by landing his injured right hand. After Gatti won the first two rounds, Damgaard had modest success in the third round as the Dane began pick up his activity level. In the fourth, Damgaard landed uppercuts that didn't hurt Gatti but arguably knocked him down as Gatti tried to sit on the bottom rope to avoid the combination. Gatti came back to stagger Damgaard at the end of the round. The action picked up in the fifth as both men landed plenty of clean shots with Gatti getting the better of the action, but not by much. Gatti wisely went from brawling to boxing in the sixth, and its safe to say Damgaard is no Floyd Mayweather in the boxing skills department. Gatti continued to land solidly without rocking Damgaard, meaning that either Damgaard has a solid chin or Gatti's chronically bad hands acted up. By the ninth it was becoming apparent that Gatti had indeed hurt his right hand. Gatti switched to a southpaw stance and bloodied the mouth and eye of Damgaard, a natural left--hander. In the tenth round, Gatti repeatedly threw his injured right hand and hurt Damgaard for the second time of the contest. Gatti didn't need any help from the referee but got some anyway in the eleventh when Damgaard was penalized a point for holding and hitting. Damgaard tried to press the action, but Gatti turned his face into a bloody mess and hurt him for a third time with a right, prompting the referee to stop the bout as Damgaard staggered around helplessly. Gatti was announced to the crowd as a world champion at welterweight, but he won only a minor title.
