Golden Johnson sets the record straight

Contrary to what another website has reported, Golden Johnson NEVER signed a contract to fight Antonio Margarito.  Golden is gearing up for his rematch fight against Oscar Diaz, set for  The Hard Rock Casino in November, in Miami, Florida.  Boxingtalk sat down with Golden Johnson this morning, and gave him the opportunity to set the record straight.

BT – Golden another website reported that you have signed a contract to fight Antonio Margarito, what are your thoughts on that?

GJ – I never signed a contract to fight Antonio Margarito.  I have a fight scheduled for November 3rd to rematch Oscar Diaz.  I never signed a contract to fight Margarito, nothing like that.

BT – So you never signed a contract, nor gave a quote or permission to put that up anywhere, would that be fair to say?

GS – Yes sir.

BT – With that said, Boxingtalk appreciates you setting that straight.

BT – With that behind us, how do you see the rematch with Diaz?

GS – I see another good fight, he's going to want to revenge his loss.  I think that I will beat him even easier.  I am  more confident with myself now being that I knocked him out last time.

BT – Where will this fight take place?

GS – From what I heard, it's going to be in Miami, at the Hard Rock.

BT – Will this fight be a co feature?

GS – I believe it will on the Glen Johnson card vs Hanshaw.

BT – I spoke with Gary Shaw about that, (Hanshaw's promoter), he told me no contract has been signed for that fight either.  But that could be subject to change.

GS – Well that's what we are training for, the Oscar Diaz fight.  I beat him convincingly last time, so I will just have to do it again.  There is a good rivalry between us being that we are both from San Antonio.

BT – Even though a contract has not been signed with Margarito, is it in the works?

GS – Well right now I am just focused on Oscar Diaz in November, if it happens great, but right now I focused on rematching Oscar Diaz.

BT – I am guessing if you had already signed a contract to fight Margarito, we wouldn't even be talking about Oscar Diaz at this point (laughs).

GS – (laughs), exactly, I wouldn't even be talking about Diaz if there was a done deal with Margarito.

BT – Golden thanks for your time.

GS – No problem, thank you.
