Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer had this to say regarding undefeated WBA lightweight champion Juan Diaz's surprising decision to sign with Don King Productions instead of Golden Boy Promotions. "We had agreed to all terms and the deal was confirmed by Willie Savannah to me, Oscar and our senior advisor Don Chargin.'You have my word that we have a deal.' In fact Savannah confirmed it to Greg Leon of Boxingtalk.com and Dan Rafael of ESPN.com Diaz's attorney Fred Levine confirmed it to Steven Espinoza as late as Saturday night, telling Espinoza there was zero chance he would go with Don King. When Savannah told me that Don King came forward with a better offer, which included the repayment of $30,000 which King owed Savannah going back many, many years and King promised to take Juan Diaz to the White House to meet President Bush, I knew it was going to be difficult for Savannah to live up to his word. Interesting though, that Don King is using President Bush to sign fighters these days. I wonder if the President of the United States knows that Don King is using him to sign fighters, but I guess that is what King is all about, ONLY IN AMERICA. Just hope for Savannah that Don King lives up to his word because usually, what goes around comes around. In the end however, the single most important person in this whole is Juan Diaz and all of us at Golden Boy wish him much success in his career. Who knows?
