Glen Johnson to Face George Khalid Jones on Best Damn Sports Show Period in IBF Title Eliminator on September 30th?
Before he is able to face the winner of Antonio Tarver-Roy Jones Jr. III, and totally dominating his division like he feels he should, Glen Johnson is preparing for his tentative bout set for September 30th against George Khalid Jones on The Best Damn Sports Show Period. BoxingTalk spoke with Johnson to get his thoughts on seeing action next month, who he is picking for Tarver-Jones III, and if this is his last fight under the Goossen-Tutor banner.
BoxingTalk: Glen, when are we seeing you in the ring again?Glen Johnson: Right now I’m getting ready for a tentative date in late September to fight on the Best Damn Sports Show Period. It will be an eliminator bout for the #1 spot for the IBF, and then after that fight, I’ll try and get the winner of the Antonio Tarver – Roy Jones fight.
BoxingTalk: Who is your pick for Tarver-Jones III?Glen Johnson: I’m going with Roy Jones based on the 14 rounds they fought in their first two fights, I gave more rounds to Jones. Besides another shocking knockout, I believe Jones will beat Tarver.
BoxingTalk: Do you know who your opponent will be next month?Glen Johnson: It’s not public information yet. I know I’m talking to a reporter, and I know what I tell a reporter becomes public information. Everything is not set yet, and I don’t want to speculate right now who my opponent is in case it doesn’t work out. Everything really is still tentative, the date and the opponent. I have ideas who my next opponent will be and who the IBF will approve for that fight, but I don’t want to overstep my boundaries.
NOTE: GOOSSEN-TUTOR’S TOM BROWN INFORMED BOXINGTALK THAT GEORGE JONES IS ON THE TOP OF THE LIST TO FACE GLEN JOHNSON IN AN IBF TITLE ELIMINATOR ON SEPTEMBER 30TH.BoxingTalk: Will this upcoming bout be your last fight under Goossen-Tutor?Glen Johnson: It could be, but not necessarily is. We’re going to do this fight, and then I’ll give him the opportunity to put the best offer on the table. If he can do that then we certainly have a reason to go forward…
BoxingTalk: …Otherwise you will become a free agent.Glen Johnson: Everyone is open for me, but I’ll give Goossen the first opportunity to do something. After that then I’ll make a move to somebody else.
BoxingTalk: What type of performance should we expect to see from Glen Johnson next month?Glen Johnson: Total dominance. The world has yet to see the best Glen Johnson, and that’s who I’m trying to present for everyone to see. I want to get everyone excited again. We fought twice and still Antonio Tarver has not seen the best Glen Johnson. Same goes with Roy Jones. I’m still learning, I’m still putting my best package together, and I want to represent that the next time I step out. I want the people to get excited again, and that’s what I’m trying to create. I am sure everybody will be happy when they see me again.
BoxingTalk: With that last loss against Tarver, will you train differently, and do you feel that are starting over again?Glen Johnson: I’m always motivated. Motivation is nothing that I lack. What happened for me is that I wasn’t active for 6 months, and to be honest with you, it was the longest I had been out of the gym. I’m a guy who stays in the gym, because I get fights on short notice. I really took a break. I had three fights that year, and the time off got away from me. But it happens to the best of us, and now I’m just working to getting back where I belong, and that’s at the top.
