Gilbert returns with early stoppage

Joey Gilbert TKO2 William Johnson... Super middleweight contender Joey Gilbert wasted no time taking control of the action Thursday night, flooring William Johnson with his first punch. The Reno, NV resident dropped Johnson, a Mississippi veteran with a losing record, a total of four times before a halt was called to the action at 1:18 of the second round. Gilbert and Jesse Brinkley are scheduled for their long awaited showdown in early 2009, details of which will be announced shortly.

“I felt great right out of the box, he threw a combination and I decked him with a solid overhand right. He was game and aggressive but I was able to beat him to the punch on a consistent basis” said Gilbert.

Knocking down Johnson twice more in the first, Gilbert finished him with a left hook to the body in the second. With the win, Gilbert moves to 17-1-1 with his second straight knockout win in the last three weeks. On October 30th, he knocked out Dan Wallace, also in the second round, his first bout back coming off a thirteen month layoff.

Said Gilbert, “I’ve been training diligently since September and these last two fights have been terrific for me. I’d like one more in the next couple of weeks before I begin camp for the Brinkley fight.” source: press release
