Getting Uglier: Ted Watley Vs. Shelly Finkel

Boxingtalk.com received another call from Ted Watley, who is far from done talking about Shelly Finkel's "shakedown to rip Mike Tyson off." Watley stated, "If Shelly Finkel wasn't bald and Jewish, and he was a black man like Don King, or any other black promoter, there would be red flag's all over the place and that promoter would be on his way to jail. When they show the PPV three times, it's an embarrassment for a fighter to be raped liked that. John Blue, who has no clue on what boxing is all about, participated in two of the PPV events and he still doesn't know what the number count is. When you ask Shelly Finkel about the event in Connecticut, he will tell you the only people who had to pay for the event were non-Showtime subscribers and that is a lie. Showtime will not support that statement and goes to show that Shelly Finkel is just what I said he was, a liar. All you need to do is track the foreign sales and the proof will be in the documentation. And the documentation will bear witness that Finkel is lying and he has ripped Mike Tyson off again. But this is nothing new to Finkel. Read (Thomas) Hauser's stories (on Secondsout.com) and you see how he was making multiples of what the Olympians were making. If he's making multiples of what the Olympians (Rocky Juarez, Juan Diaz and Panchito Bojado) were making what do you think he's doing to Mike Tyson?"

"For Shelly Finkel to use statements that Ted Watley is doing this because of money from him to me is the biggest lie that was ever told. But unfortunately, once you start lying you can't stop lying and that's what you're seeing here, a fellow going down a slippery slope. Shelly Finkel's behavior is clear and most of the time he gets paid more than the athlete does because he uses deceptive measures, subterfuge and deceit to rip fighter's off repeatedly.

"In this case, Finkel understood from the get go, that if I was involved with him with Mike Tyson as long as there was no subterfuge going on I was fine. Once I recognized that this was a rip-off, the gig was up.

"And let's make this clear, Shelly Finkel will not take Ted Watley into any court room in America. I wish that would take place because the discovery would speak for itself. I wish Gary Shaw would live up to that empty threat about suing me which he made when you put me on the line with him and Shelly on the other end.

"But they don't have the balls to sue me because once they do that, the game would change in a court of law. Once the documentation would be asked for they'd have to give it up and the discovery would speak for itself. All you have to do is follow the money. Let me say that again in case you didn't hear me right, all you need to do is follow the money.

"Clearly this has proven to be nothing more than a sham and as I continue down my path to prove it, stay tuned because it's only going to get better as more of the truth comes out."

GL: So your position remains the same that you and Shelly Finkel are partners, correct?

Ted Watley: "Shelly Finkel and I have a contract that clearly speaks to the issue of our relationship. When you talk to my attorney he will back up everything I've said. I want to let my attorney explain to you the legal rammifications of the relationship between Shelly and myself. Between Shelly Finkel and Gary Shaw, the two of them have put up a nice front as if they are for the fighter and for the athelte and they are doing nothing but lining their pockets. They have no care or concern for the athlete at all and the majority of their athlete's are Black or Hispanic. If you look at the Klitschko brother's, these two guys were hit from the blindside.

"They thought that if they come in this country and get represented by Mike Tyson's manager that they have gotten a better deal, not realizing that Shelly Finkel, being the snake that he is, is not out for their best interest. He had a fight scheduled for Danny Williams to fight one of the Klitschko's right after Danny Williams had beaten Mike Tyson. That deal fell through because of greed, just ask the people at The Mandalay Bay who they tried to sell the fight to two weeks ago and they'll tell you the same thing. Because of my exposing this behavior, they'll probably take the Williams-Klitschko fight off the table.

"And Danny Williams is also represented by whom? None other than Frank Warren, and I can assure you if Mike Tyson had any idea that Frank Warren was related to Danny Williams in any shape, fashion or form, that fight would have never taken place. And don't forget that Danny Williams was slipped in under Mike Tyson, that was not the scheduled event. Williams came in at the eleventh hour and Mike Tyson was sold a dream and a lie."

GL: (Leon read Finkel's Entire Rebuttal To Watley verbatim at this point of the interview.) Watley responded with the following.

TW: "After this episode of me exposing how Shelly Finkel ripped off Mike Tyson for this particular fight, it will open up the door for us to go back and revisit every single event that he's done with Mike Tyson and then you're going to find out that this ripoff pales in comparison to how he's been ripping Mike Tyson off from day one. And the numbers will blow your mind when you see how much money he's taken from Tyson. And you don't have you to worry about that contract Shelly wouldn't send you because as soon as I get back from Florida I'm going to do just that.

"I will let my attorney address all of the money issues so you can get it from somebody who can legally speak to that. As far as him bringing me in as a father figure, that's bullshit. Shelly Finkel's ass was scared to death that he was losing Mike Tyson and that's why he came and knocked on my door. He was losing Tyson, he had no communication and I opened up that door to him, so that's why he came and got me. Shelly Finkel is lying as usual. All you need to do is follow the money. Follow the money of the foreign sales for this fight and all of the other fight's Shelly was involved in. Tell them to put the numbers on the table and then tell them to ask you how much of that money went to Mike Tyson.

"I'm entitled to 50% of what Shelly Finkel earns for his next three fights with Mike Tyson, so what the fuck would I need to go hustle him for? If I wanted to shake Finkel down I could have done it for real money not some bullshit money. The contract clearly states that I'm entitled to 50% of what he makes but I'll let my lawyer explain it to you so can get that to him from a legal end.

"Make sure you ask my lawyer about what John Blue said to him and ask my lawyer to repeat what Johnathan Blue came to us with. Blue came to us we didn't go to him and he came to us because he felt that he was being ripped off and he wanted to know if I was involved in the rip-off. To this day Johnathan Blue hasn't talked to Showtime and he's still wondering where his PPV money is. I'm the one that told Johnathan Blue that there's a 90 day turn around, but they are entitled to show you their books. And Showtime has yet to do that."

"Again, I wish that Gary Shaw and Shelly Finkel would have the nerve to sue me because the discovery would speak for itself on this event and all of the past events between Shelly Finkel and Mike Tyson."

(Note: Boxingtalk.com has placed more than one direct call to Mike Tyson, we've left him two messages and are currently waiting to hear back from him)

Finkel Proves That Watley Is Not His Partner And Says He'll Prove Everything Else Wrong In Court!
By G. Leon

Mike Tyson's manager Shelly Finkel faxed Boxingtalk.com a copy of his two-page agreement with (Thaddeus) Ted Watley. Contrary to what Watley told Boxingtalk on September 6, that he and Finkel "are still partners", part of section 4 of the agreement, which Finkel read to us from  yesterday, does in fact state, "Nothing in this agreement shall create or constitute a relationship of partnership, joint venture, agency." One might wonder if Watley, who is in fact entitled to 50% of what Finkel makes on Tyson's next two fights, couldn't get his facts straight on something so rudimentary as the legal status of his relationship with Finkel, how many other holes will be found when the matter goes before a judge? In his most recent interview with Boxingtalk Watley states, "I wish Shelly Finkel and Gary Shaw would sue me", and it looks like his wish is going to come true within the next 48hours.  Just minutes ago, Boxingtalk.com conducted an exclusive interview with Finkel regarding this matter, shortly after the conclusion of this interview Finkel conferenced in former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who gave us his opinion on Ted Watley.

"Ted Watley said that Shelly Finkel is afraid to sue him because of what will come out, but I'm sure Ted Watley will realize very shortly that, that is incorrect as is everything else in his statement. Second, again, I refute everything that he said and the difference between him and I is, I have proof of everything."

GL: Ted Watley says that he's entitled to 50% of whatever you make on Mike Tyson, is that correct?

Shelly Finkel: "That was correct."

GL: Are you saying was because you after you take legal action against him that will no longer be correct?

SF: "That the courts will decide."

GL: Ted Watley told me that he only made $72,000 on the Tyson Vs. Williams fight....

SF: (cutting in) "That is a lie."

GL: Watley said he only made $72,000 off the fight and he also guaranteed me that you made a lot more than that.

SF: "That is a lie and it will also be proven. He made more than that, a lot more than that."

GL: Can you explain the difference between a partner (with Tyson)  and somebody who makes 50% of what you do?

SF: "Contractually it says that he is not a partner. A partnership is a specific thing that is created legally. Our agreement specifically says that he is not my partner. He gets a fee from me for doing certain work for me. I am the exclusive contract with Mike Tyson and no one else. He has no part of my deal with Tyson, he has a deal with me and he is not my partner and my contract with him specifically states that."

GL: People might look at this and say, why give him 50% to serve as a father-figure to Mike? What's the reasoning behind giving Ted Watley 50%?

SF: "I made a mistake and Ted Watley conned me very good and I learned as I hope I learn everyday. I made a big mistake."

GL: Legally Ted Watley is not your partner, but is he entitled to an accounting of what's gone on with the Tyson Vs. Williams fight?

SF: "I don't think so. I can he can have something with me, he has no rights to Tyson at all, but if he legally is entitled to it I'd be glad to show it because there was nothing to hide."

GL: Dan Goossen, in the second Thomas Hauser piece, said it would be interesting to see how the numbes would look if you were audited with Tyson as Don King once was. If in fact, this situation goes to court and that happens, is there no doubt the numbers would be kosher?

SF: "More than that, I have already been audited by the creditors and debtors committee for the Tyson bankruptcy and everything was perfect there nothing for me to be concerned about."

GL: When you were audited was that detailed to where they went over everything with a magnifying glass and a fine tooth comb?

SF: "Two fined tooth combs, because they subpoened every record of everyone. From the lawyers, myself, Showtime, everyone."

GL:  What is your percentage of Mike Tyson's purses?

SF: "Under 10%."

GL: And the only income you've received with regards to Mike Tyson came directly from his purses, correct?

SF: "Correct."

Shortly after the conclusion of the interview, Finkel conferenced in former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who has had previous dealings with Watley. Holmes described Watley as a "conman" a "butt-hole" and "not the kind of person you want around you."
