Galal Yafai TKO5 Sunny Edwards... In a battle between a former pro champ and an Olympic gold medal winner, Galal Yafai pounded a disinterested Sunny Edwards for five rounds and avenged an amateur loss. The fight was held in held in Birmingham, England. Yafai got off to a very strong start and after two rounds, Edwards could be heard telling his trainer, "Can I be real with you? I don't want to be here." The end came in round five with Yafai pounding an unmoving Edwards against the ropes. The referee asked Edwards to "show me something," and when Edward did not oblige, the referee intervened, giving Yafai the win via technical knockout. Coming in, Edwards was arguably one of the top two flyweights in the world, along with WBC champion Kenshiro Teraji of Japan. The informal top two designation now passes to Yafai. Edwards was the IBF flyweight champion from 2021 through 2023. He lost his championship to Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez, but Rodriguez has already moved up in weight.
Yafai, the 2021 Olympic champion is listed as an undefeated pro, but paid fights in the World Series of Boxig make 16-3 the most accurate record for him. The reigning 112-pound champions are Teraji (WBC), Angel Ayala (IBF), Anthony Olascuaga (WBO) and Seigo Yuri Akui (WBA).
Edwards (21-2) announced his retirement immediately afterwards and said he knew going in this would be his last fight because the no longer had the passion to continue. Afterwards, promoter Eddie Hearn said Edwards would continue to serve as a boxing commentator.
