Funds apparently running low for Pernell Whitaker

According to WVEC.com, in Norfolk, Virginia, all-time great Pernell Whitaker is seeking to evict his mother from a house he bought for her 30 years ago. According to the report, unpaid real estate taxes have mounted, and Whitaker needs to sell the house in order to make payment and recover $200,000 worth if equity in the house. Whitaker's lawyer was quoted as saying the former four-division champion "doesn't have the income to sustain these kinds of losses right now." Whitaker made millions in his career, which was highlighted by a 1984 Olympic gold medal, a long reign as the world lightweight champion, and big fights vs. Julio Cesar Chavez, Azumah Nelson and Buddy McGirt. Late in his 17-year pro career, Whitaker lost to Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad. Later difficulties with substance abuse were well documented. -Scott Shaffer
