Freddie Roach Responds to Atlas' Comments About Training De La Hoya

After hearing from Teddy Atlas on Friday Night Fights that legendary trainer Freddie Roach was the man picked to be in the corner with Oscar De La Hoya when he faces Floyd Mayweather on May 5th, BoxingTalk got Roach on the phone to confirm Atlas’ story.  “It’s premature,” said Roach.  “The deal is not done.”  When asked what the extent of his communication with Golden Boy Promotions has been, Roach responded, “Richard Schaefer has contacted me twice, he asked me if I was interested, I said, 'Yes.'  That’s as far as it’s gone.”  Would Roach be up the challenge of training De La Hoya if he was called to duty?   “It depends,” said Roach.  “I’d have to see what Pacquiao’s schedule is, and what some of my other fighters’ schedules are.  I’d have to look at it closely, but I’m definitely interested.”  BoxingTalk will continue to keep you updated on this matter, until then, (11:30PM EST)
