Frampton hopeful of landing title shot vs. Herring

Carl Frampton is confident of overcoming a significant height difference to beat Jamel Herring and become a three-weight champion. Frampton came face to face with the WBO super featherweight champion after dispatching Tyler McCreary on his comeback fight – and American Herring has since expressed an eagerness to meet ‘The Jackal’ in Belfast. With a legacy-defining bout in prospect, Frampton would be delighted to play host and has dismissed concerns over a potential size difference.

Frampton said: “Herring must have been 12 stone in the ring when we faced off. I potentially could be heavier than him in the ring on the night. He’s a big man but I won’t have problems making the weight and he will. I knew this was a fight they were talking about but I imagined as the champion, Herring would want it in America but he’s shown a lot of interest in coming to Belfast. He’s a nice guy and I believe he’s a man of his word. This boxing business is about making money as well as winning titles and he’ll get plenty of money to come and fight me in Belfast. I’d love it to be at Windsor Park but if it’s at the Odyssey Arena, I’m pretty sure that’ll still be bigger than anything he’s fought on. Obviously that generates a lot of money. I think I’m a good fight for him. He’ll see me as a guy coming off an injury, short and coming up a division. That might be what he is thinking – that it’s an easy fight for good dough! I know Herring is a guy who’s been involved in war. He’s been in worse situations than a hostile Belfast crowd having being in Iraq with the Marines. He won’t have experienced an atmosphere like Belfast, though. I’m not saying he’ll collapse under pressure, but it’ll be different.”

Frampton was a titleholder in the super-bantamweight division when he outpointed Scott Quigg in February 2016 and dethroned Leo Santa Cruz on his first fight as a featherweight just five months later.
