Mairis Briedis, who had three reigns as a cruiserweight champion and won the World Boxing Super Series tournament in 2020, has announced his retirement from boxing. Briedis leaves with a record of 28-3 and goes into the books as the best Latvian boxer ever. Briedis' only losses were certainly forgivable. His first title reign ended when he lost to the greatest cruiserweight of all-time, Oleksandr Usyk. His other two losses came against the best current cruiserweight, Jai Opetaia. Briedis holds wins over heavyweight Manuel Charr, plus cruiserweight champs Noel Mikalejan (the current WBC ruler), Yuniel Dorticos, Marco Huck and Krzysztof Glowacki. The Glowacki win was problematic, as Glowacki used multiple illegal blows to win, inflicting punishment that considerably damaged Glowacki's career. Briedis refused to give Glowacki a rematch despite being ordered to do so by the WBO, a decision which ended his second title reign.
Glowacki wrote on social media, "It's time to say goodbye to the ring and close this chapter of my career. A huge thank you to everyone who supported me along the way. Your faith, your cheers and your love made me who I am. We walked this road together. Thanks for everything."
