According to the Times of London, former British heavyweight champion James Oyebola was shot in the face and leg after an angry club goer took offense at Oyebola asking him to put out his cigarette. The shooting occurred at the Chateau 6 club in Fulham, southwest London when Oyebola asked three men to put out their cigarettes and telling them it was against the law. The men apparently took the suggestion as a sign of disrespect and one of the men shot at James as they were exiting the club. According to officials, there is a smoking ban in place in all London clubs, bars and restaurants. There is no suspect at this time. Oyebola was apparently going to receive an honor from the president of Ghana for his work on African boxing. Oyebola won the vacant British title in 1995 against Clifton Mitchell and lost it to Scott Welch. He retired after a 1996 loss to Julius Francis with a career record of 18-4-1.Â
