Floyd TKOs Sharmba in sixth

By Wyatt Johnston

At the Rose Garden, in Portland, Floyd Mayweather Jr. made his welterweight debut and put on another spectacular performance against former WBA junior welterweight title holder Sharmba Mitchell. As expected, Mayweather dominated the whole way with the speed, accuracy and overall skill that has made him the pound-for-pound best in the world.  Mayweather wobbled Mitchell as early as the first round, then put him down in the third with a beautiful straight hand. To Mitchell's credit, he managed to get in some good blows in the fourth round, but they had no effect on Mayweather and weren't even enough to carry the round.  Mayweather ended the fight in the sixth round with a straight to the body that put Mitchell down on a delayed reaction.  Mitchell did get up at the count of nine but it was clear he was only in for more punishment if the fight continued. Mayweather will now look for a bout against the welterweight champion of the world, Zab Judah who is scheduled for a mandatory defense against Carlos Baldomir on January 7, 2006.  With the win, Mayweather improves to 35-0 while Mitchell falls to 56-5 and perhaps should consider ending his distinguished career. source: HBO
