Famoso returns with Golden Boy in his corner

PRESS RELEASE: LOS ANGELES, June 6 – After facing the best fighters of his era and becoming the first fighter from El Salvador to win a world championship, Carlos ‘El Famoso’ Hernandez’s place in boxing history is already secure.  But after a year and a half away from the game, Hernandez’s desire to once again wear a world championship belt around his waist has been renewed and he has chosen Golden Boy Promotions as the team to bring him back to the top.

“This is a great moment in my career and I know that with Golden Boy Promotions behind me, I will not only get the opportunity to fight for a title again, but I will get the big fights I’ve always dreamed of,” said Hernandez, who signed his contract at the Golden Boy Promotions Los Angeles office on Friday.  “I feel rested and better than ever.  This break has made me hungry again. The lightweight division needs to look out, because I’m back.”

“Anyone who has followed boxing in the last 15 years knows ‘Famoso’ Hernandez and what he brings to the ring,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.  “He is one of the game’s true warriors and we know he still has what it takes to challenge and beat the best.  We’re excited about working with such a great talent and representative of the sport.”

Added Hernandez’ adviser, Greg Leon, “It's an honor to be working with Golden Boy Promotions as their track record speaks for itself.  The love of the sport is still flowing through Carlos Hernandez's veins, his competitive fires are burning stronger than ever and he looks forward to proving this starting with his Golden Boy debut.  Adding a lightweight championship to his trophy case is one of the things I am confident ‘Famoso’ is capable of doing.”

A native of Soyapango, El Salvador who now makes his home in San Antonio, Texas, Carlos Hernandez (42-7-1, 24 KOs) is unquestionably one of the most popular lightweights of his time.  An exciting warrior who has a history of providing unforgettable battles, he won the IBF World Junior Lightweight title in 2003 with an emotional victory over David Santos.  He is also remembered for his gallant battles with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Jesus Chavez and Erik Morales, which made him must-see TV for all fight fans.  Hernandez took a break from the game in late 2006, but has stayed in shape and later this year will make what is expected to be a triumphant return.

Hernandez’ debut under the Golden Boy Promotions banner will be announced at a later date.
