Exclusive Interview: Raul "El Diamante" Marquez

GL: It's been a while since we've had you on Boxingtalk, we're ten days or so away from your next fight with Giovanni  Lorenzo, that will air on Showtime Championship Boxing on June 21. How has camp been and what can we expect to see from you come fight night? "Everything is good, I'm just winding down, I've had a great training camp. When I fought Bronco McKart, I took one week off and I was back in camp again so I was already in shape. Everything is good and I'm going to be ready for June 21."

GL: Have you studied Lorenzo at all? What do you know about him as a fighter?

Raul Marquez: "I'm not going to mention the weaknesses. Yes, I've studied a couple of his fights. If you look at his record, I guess the biggest name he got on his resume is Archak, the Shark attack or whatever they call that guy. Other than that he hasn't fought anybody. He's a young guy, he's hungry and he looks strong and powerful, but he hasn't gone the rounds. I got all the experience in the world. He's not bringing anything I haven't seen before. I've been in there with Vargas, Mosley and Taylor and I've fought a lot of championship rounds. I think my experience is going to take over in this fight. I know it's going to be a tough fight because the guy is going to be motivated, but I'm more motivated than he is because this is my last hurrah. I'm excited and I'm motivated for this fight because it's a do or die situation."

GL: Will you call it a career if you don't deliver on June 21?

RM: "Absolutely. Every fight since I lost to Jermain Taylor, every fight has been do or die for me. Now, I've got this opportunity and this is a guy who Kelly Pavlik wouldn't fight. He went on to fight the English Muffin. This is the guy that Abraham isn't fighting, that left me with a big opportunity to fight him for the number one spot. If I win this fight I'm guaranteed a fight with Arthur Abraham and I would fight either him or Pavlik. I think people would want to watch me fight the middleweight champions than some of the guys they've been fighting lately. The guys Pavlik fought last weekend and Marco Antonio Rubio, Abraham fought Ayala and another no name. I think people are going to want to see me fight them when I beat Lorenzo."

GL: Do you think the fight will go the distance?

RM: "I'm not going to make any predictions, I just care about the win Greg. I'm going to win and I'm going to break this guy down round by round like the veteran I am. The most he's ever gone is eight rounds and that means a lot, that experience in the championship and the level of opposition, I know it will make a difference. We're both Olympians and I'm looking to win, I'm ready to be mentioned the next time they're talking about the major players in the middleweight division."

GL: Closing thoughts?

RM: "It's always good to be back on Boxingtalk. Out of all the boxing sites, Greg Leon keeps putting me up there and doesn't give up on El Diamante. I want my fans to watch me on June 21 on Showtime, I'll be the opening fight and I'm sure you'll be the first one to call me to congratulate me on my win."
