Exclusive Interview: Nonito Donaire

Nonito Donaire is looking to return to the ring this weekend on the undercard of the Showtime Doubleheader featuring Diego Corrales vs. Joel Cassamayor, and his older brother Glenn fighting Vic Darchinyan for the IBF Flyweight Title.  Nonito will be defending his NABF Super Flyweight Title against veteran Oscar Andrade.  See what “Flash” has to say about his fight with Andrade as well as his brother Glenn fighting for a world title.

Nonito, how has training gone in preparation of this fight?

Training’s really good, my brother and I had been really working hard together with sparring and running and so far so good.

Your opponent, Oscar Andrade, is a tough opponent who has fought several good fighters in the lower weight divisions, do you think your speed and reflexes will be the key?

My speed and reflexes will be my main weapon for this fight I know I’m a lot faster than he is, and I know he’ll bring everything he’s got. I’ll have to use my speed and reflexes and most of all my wits

Andrade has not been knocked out in six years, are you going to try for a knock or just box and see if it comes?

I always look for a knockout but I’m not gonna rush to force it. Whatever he brings to the ring I’ll make changes and look for the KO

How does it feel to finally get the opportunity to defend you NABF title?

I really didn’t think about it. It never crossed my mind that I’m defending, all I’m thinking about is to work hard and give it all I got and come out a winner

Your brother Glenn is fighting in the Showtime co-feature against Vic Darchinyan the IBF Flyweight champion, how do you feel Glenn will do?

Glenn had never worked as hard as he is now. He’s ready for this fight and I know he will do good, if everything goes well and he listens to my dad hell come out a world champion!

How does it feel to see your big brother fighting for a world championship and for you to get to share the card with him?

This is a blessing for us. For him to be able to fight for the belt is a blessing for our family and friends and we have been really close and focus, and we’re working harder than ever.

You were injured a couple times this year which slowed your progression, what are you looking forward to for next year and is there anyone specific you would like to fight?

I’m looking to climb up the rankings and hopefully get a chance to fight for a world title. I want to fight the best, I want to fight the champions.
