Exclusive Interview: Mario Santiago

JA: How much did it mean to you to go back and fight in your home country of Puerto Rico? "It was great. I was wishing that I could fight in Puerto Rico but I didn’t think that it would be this early in my career; I am truly blessed to have fought in my home town. It was a big night for me, the 6,000 fans were cheering for me and it was something that I will never forget."

JA: It must have been even more satisfying capping the fight off with a 4th round knockout victory.

MS: It was. When I started the fight I was going for the knockout and that is what I did.

JA: You were saying that your were surprised that the fight in Puerto Rico happened this early in your career. Are you hoping some where down the line that you can fight in Puerto Rico when you are a world champion?

MS: Most definitely. After this fight a lot of people are trying to get me back to fight in Puerto Rico. I think that I am going to be back for sure.

JA: After looking at the fight on tape. Did you do everything that you wanted to do in the fight?

MS: After looking at the tape my opponent came to fight. What impressed me the most is that this guy came to fight from the first round on. I put him down in the first round, the third round and in the fourth round I ended the fight. I was in really good shape if the fight went 12 rounds.

JA: Where do you hope this victory takes you in the division?

MS: I hope that this knockout win takes me one step closer to fighting for a world title. I am hoping that this fight will move me up in the rankings to get me closer to fighting for a world title.

JA: When can we expect to see you in the ring again next?

MS: I am fighting on either October 6th or 7th.  If not those shows I know that he has more shows coming up that he will get me on.

JA: What are some of the things that you will be working in the gym until your next fight?

MS: I am always improving on something. There are things that I need to work on like defense, combinations; I am never away from the gym. I want to learn more, spar more and I am always striving to go to the next level. I think that in my last 5 fights you have seen a big difference in me and you will continue to see some great things from me. I am constantly working on perfecting myself to being the complete fighter that I know I can be.

JA: Is there anything that you would like to say in closing?

MS: I just want to say to all my fans across the world. There is a new featherweight fighter that is coming up. I think that I am going to be the best sensation in the featherweight division.
