Exclusive Interview: Gato Figueroa

GL: It's been a while since we had you on Boxingtalk, what's the latest and greatest? "I'm just here in Big Bear, California sparring with the Hall of Famer Sugar Shane Mosley and I'm getting him ready for his fight coming up with Zab Super Judah from BK. He's preparing me for my fight on May 14, the main event on ESPN. It's my first national prime time fight."

GL: What can we expect to see from you on May 14 and what do you know about your opponent?

Gato Figueroa: "The guy I'm fighting is Luis Rodriguez. He's 22-1 with 13 knockouts. I don't have any clue about him. I googled him and I couldn't find no pictures, I know nothing about him. I do know it doesn't matter what he brings to the table, I'm going to make the adjustments and he's going to have to deal with what I'm giving him."

GL: Who's promoting you?

GF: "This fight will be DiBella in co-promotion with Yaseen Malnik."

GL: What does a victory in this fight mean to you and what are you hoping it does for your career?

GF: "Two things. For my career. It will definitely show everyone that I'm a fighter who belongs at the top, in the A division, not the B. Also, it will show my Team, Team Gato and we started a new team called can't stop, won't stop. This team extends to my fans and we all motivate each other. A win for this will uplift a lot of people in their own personal lives, not just mine."

GL: No problems with the weight?

GF: "I'm 149 with two weeks and that's the first time in history I've been able to say that. We've got a wonderful cook here, Denise. I'm about go run in a bit, have some egg whites and her famous salsa, it's good things."

GL: Closing thoughts?

GF: "I want to thank everybody on Can't Stop Won't Stop. It's a movement and to find out about the movement, check out myspace.com/gatofigueroa. Hit me up, I'm a fan friendly boxer. Ask any question you want and I'll answer."
