GL: Congrats on your recent victory over Calvin Brock. Can you give us some thoughts on your performance? "It was a good performance. It could have been better. I expected more than a split decision, but I guess one judge was leaning towards Brock's activity. I don't think he was effective, I know I won the fight, but I think there should have been a larger margin of victory."
GL: Do you feel you should have won the fight unanimously?Eddie Chambers: "I feel I should have won the fight unanimously. Calvin Brock brought his A game, but it wasn't enough that night."
GL: I spoke with Brock the other day and he basically feels that he was the victim of a bad decision. How do you feel about that?EC: "Nah. It wasn't a bad decision. I think I won the fight unanimously and I think I took the decision, but my aggressiveness was much more effective. My punches were landing and his weren't. The things he was doing in the ring didn't have any effect on the fight. He caught me with some good shots and he actually boxed, but he boxed because I forced him to do that. He couldn't come straight to me and bomb me out. He thought he was going to be able to jab his way and keep me moving, keep me running and it just didn't happen.
"I pressed the fight and I landed the most telling and best shots in the fight, therefore I got the decision. Me personally, I feel like I should have gotten more, but I'm not upset with myself. I could have done more and there's no reason it had to make the final bell. I would have stopped him if I did the right things. He's a tough guy and a warrior and he's been in there with the top guys, so it wasn't like I was in there easy. He brought a good fight plan and he tried to work it, I was just the better man that night."
GL: Your next fight is supposed to take place against Povetkin for the right to face the IBF champion. Can you give us some thoughts on Povetkin as a fighter and when do you think we can expect that fight to take place?EC: "Povetkin seems to have some skills and he's athletic. He doesn't move a lot and he doesn't move his head a lot. He's more offensive minded than defensive and that's always going to make for a good fight against a counter-puncher like me. I think it's going to be a really good fight that is worth the price of admission."
GL: I spoke with your promoter Dan Goossen and he clearly feels a lot more comfortable with the fight taking place in the United States. Do you feel the same way?EC: "Of course. I would love for the fight to take place in the United States. I would rather fight here than have to go to Germany. This is a big step that will take me to the next level. I've fought in people's hometown's so that doesn't bother me and if that's how it turns out then I'll have to deal with it. I'm not a prospect anymore, I'm a contender and I'm fighting top guys so I have to understand I have to do whatever needs to be done to get to the title."
GL: Can you beat Povetkin bringing what you brought for Calvin Brock or do you need to bring more to the table in order to be victorious?EC: "My defense will have to be as good or better, but I don't think that performance wouldn't be enough to win. I have to throw more combinations and jump on him every chance I get. Some guys don't understand the strength I have when I counter-punch. He's going to come out just like Brock did and try to bring the fight to me, but then when he sees what I bring hopefully that will change things. Most likely it will."
GL: Did you see Povetkin's fight with Chris Byrd?EC: "I saw some of it and Povektin is a trooper he throws a lot of punches and he's nonstop. I did see that he respected Byrd's speed. He didn't just jump in so I'm sure he's learning as he's come along. He's shown a lot of signs, and I don't want to say weakness, but Byrd is not a big puncher, but he does respect speed. I have to do more homework on him and figure out which looks give him trouble."
GL: What's the soonest you could be ready to fight?EC: "I could be ready by January. I would rather not fight until February, but I'm ready to go. I want to get one step closer to the fight with Klitschko, that would be a big fight and that's the fight I'm working towards."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?EC: "Stay tuned and check me out. Hopefully this fight will be coming soon and there's going to be a lot of fireworks. Look out for me because I will be champion."
