Exclusive Interview: David Diaz

GL: There's a big fight in your backyard featuring the other two Diaz boys with lightweight championships. I imagine you'll be in the building can you give us some thoughts on the fight? "I definitely want to fight the winner. Unifying the division is something that is in my plans. I wish both of them the best on Saturday night. I think it's a good fight for the Chicago area and hopefully down the line we'll be able to get a fight going. I just feel Juan is going to put a lot of pressure on Julio. If I was a betting man, which I'm not, I'd put my money on Juan. He puts on relentless pressure and I don't know if Julio can deal with that pressure at that pace. I have to give the advantage to Juan."

GL: You hold the WBC title and Casamayor is the interim champion. Is that a fight that interests you?

David Diaz: "Definitely. I would look into that. The thing with Casamayor is he's been ranting and raving about how he's the champ, but he's the one who gave up the belt. I was there to receive and it defend it against Erik Morales so I consider myself the full blown champion. If Casamayor wants to fight and it makes to most sense I won't back away from it like he backed out from me."

GL: When can we expect to see you back in the ring?

DD: "Hopefully in February or March. That's what I'm looking at and right now I'm taking a little time off to spend time with my family and my newborn son. He was born while I was in training camp for my last fight so I'm just spending time with them."

GL: Do you think the winner of the fight on Saturday night must fight you next to have one unified champion?

DD: "I think they do. Everybody knows that having all three of the big belts, the WBC, WBA and IBF makes you undisputed. That's something I want, that's something Juan wants and I think that's something Julio wants. So whoever wins that fight I think we need to get down and dance."

GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?

DD: "I appreciate the call. I appreciate everybody who stood by me before my last fight. I want to tell all of the boxing fans to keep their eyes open because I will be coming back to give them something special in February or March."
