Ex-heavyweight Dave Zyglewicz passes away

The Times Union reports that former heavyweight Dave "Ziggy" Zyglewicz died earlier this week. He was 79 years old. In 1969, Zyglewicz challenged Joe Frazier for the heavyweight championship. Zyglewicz came out bombing and landed a couple of punches, but he got knocked out in about ninety seconds by Frazier's renowned left hook. However, Zyglewicz became friends with Frazier, who later visited Zyglewicz's bar in Watervliet, New York. The former foes also went to Saratoga Race Course together. Zyglewicz never had any other really big fights but left the sport with a record of 32-4. He died the day before a street in his hometown was named after him. Boxingtalk sends its sympathies to the friends and family of Dave Zyglewicz.
