Ex-champ on trial for drug dealing

By Scott Shaffer

Ellyas Pical, one of the very few Indonesian boxers to claim a world title, is on trial for dealing drugs in his country's capital city, Jakarta. Pical is accused of selling three esctasy pills to undercover police. If convicted, Pical faces four to fifteen years in an Indonesian prison. His attorney insists Pical is innocent but that will be ultimately determined when the trial resumes next week. Pical won the IBF 115-pound title in 1985 when he stopped Ju Do Chun. In 1986, he lost the title to Cesar Polanco but won it back in an immediate rematch. He made several defenses before trying to unify against one of the greatest junior bantamweights of all time, Khaosai Galaxy. Pical was stopped in the fourteenth round by Galaxy, but he bounced back to reclaim the IBF title that was stripped from him. His career record is reported as 20-5-1 overall, 8-3 in world title bouts. source: Jakarta Post
