Mauricio Lara continues his road to becoming a two-weight champion when he takes on Carlos Ornelas in an all-Mexico main event at Complejo Deportivo Artes Marciales in Guadalajara on Saturday August 29th, live worldwide on DAZN. Lara (30-3-2, 23 KOs) is ready to step on the gas in his bid to claim a 130-pound title. He became WBA 126-pound champion in 2023 when he knocked out Leigh Wood in Nottingham, England – a second stunning KO win in Britain after he shocked the boxing world with his demolition of Josh Warrington two years earlier. Lara lost the title in a rematch with Wood.
Ornelas (29-5, 16 KOs) is the latest man looking to halt Lara’s train. Ornelas returned to winning ways earlier this year in February with a second-round stoppage in a tune-up bout, bouncing back from a defeat in April last year to Abdullah Mason, who is now a lightweight champion.
“I’m thrilled to come back to a DAZN boxing card,” said Lara, who meets Ornelas over ten rounds. “Like I’ve said before, ‘Bronco’ Lara is back. I will show the world why I once was world champion and that I am ready for any 130lb fighter. It’s been three years since I lost my title, so I am focused in becoming world champion again. Matchroom and BXSTRS have done good in giving me another shot on August 29 in Guadalajara, and I’ll repay them with an exciting performance.”
“Thank you to Matchroom and BXSTRS for the opportunity,” said Ornales. “I’m sending Bronco into retirement.”
“It’s great to be back in Mexico, and to have Bronco headlining live on DAZN once again,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Our Mexico shows always guarantee excitement, and when you put Mauricio on the top of a card, that only adds to the fireworks. The 130lbs division is stacked with great fighters, and you can certainly put Mauricio right in there with the best of them with another win on August 29th.”
