European Senior Amateurs begin championship tournament!

Forty two nations will compete in the 36th European Senior Boxing Championships which begin in  Bulgaria tomorrow, July 14, 2006. The competing countries yesterday arrived in the medieval city of Plovdiv to take part in tomorrow’s opening ceremony. Russian boxers are being hotly tipped to dominate the medals tables and Irish boxing chief Gary Keegan believes they will be the ones to watch at the eleven-day tournament. Ireland will be represented by a four-man squad consisting of Ken Egan (81Kg), Darren O'Neill (75Kg), Roy Sheahan (69Kg) and Eric Donovan (75Kg).  The quartet have spent the last ten days training with the Russian national team in Moscow and according to Keegan their preparations have gone exceptionally well. "The squad have got some top class sparring and training done with the Russian national squad although it has been tough. However this is exactly what we need ahead of what will be the biggest event on our calendar this year. Russia are one of the top amateur boxing nations here in Bulgaria and they will be looking to win as many medals as possible", he added.
