Estrada: Margarito is a hypocrite

GL: What's the latest and greatest and when can we expect to see you back in the ring? "I was hoping to be back in the ring on March 3. They offered me the fight with Margarito, but I don't know what's going on with it yet because they told me it was a ten round fight. I told them that I don't like ten round fights, but if they make it a twelve rounder I'm in. I don't think they will though, so I'll probably be back in the ring sometime in late March."

GL: Why wouldn't you fight him in a ten round fight?

David Estrada: "Because I'm a twelve round fighter, I hate ten round fights and I feel like I got to rush. People be like it's only two more rounds, but that's an extra six minutes for me and I'm the kind of fighter who comes on late in the fight. It's one of my advantages and I don't want to give it up."

GL: After seeing Margarito look vulnerable against Joshua Clottey, do you think you could be letting an opportunity slip through your fingers based on the fact that he's in a much better position than you are right now?

DE: "Not really because as long as I keep winning there will be other opportunities out there. If it's not him it will be somebody else. I know what's waiting for me and I'm going to get it one day."

GL: How do you feel about this situation with Margarito looking to make a ten rounder with a mandatory challenger due?

DE: "That's one thing I don't understand. If he's not going to fight his mandatory whoever he fights should be a twelve round fight. He's at the championship level, why go down to the ten round level? It don't make no sense to me. It's kind of hypocritical for him to not fight the mandatory after trying to say that Mayweather and Mosley didn't want to fight him. I'm not saying that he's scared and I think it has to do with his management wanting to make sure he fights Cotto. He'll make a lot more with Cotto than he will with Paul Williams and that might be where the problem is, but sometimes as a champion you need to stand up and do the right thing for the sport and for the fans. Mosley is a real fighter and he did the right thing twice by fighting Winky Wright and Vernon Forrest. Nobody wanted to fight them and he gave them their shot. How can you not respect a guy like that?"

GL: Since you're acknowledging that they probably view Paul Williams as a bit too risky with Cotto on the horizon do you feel disrespected at all since they view you as the type of fighter that would help Margarito preserve a Cotto fight?

DE: "I kind of like that, because I've always been the underdog anyway. When people treat me like that I get in that ring and make them eat their words and look stupid. Like I said, I would love to fight him but it has to be a twelve round fight or I'm not fighting him. And I'm not changing my mind about that unless there's some crazy amount of money that I know there's not going to be. I'm not getting the title shot I want and I"m not getting the money I want so why fight ten rounds when we can go twelve? "
