Enzo Maccarinelli KO4 Mohamed Azzaoui... With all due respect to Kelly Pavlik's trainer Jack Loew, Enzo Calzaghe clinched the 2007 trainer of the year award in Cardiff, Wales tonight. Even before Calzaghe's son Joe made a virtuoso showing in the main event, another Enzo Calaghe-trained product, Enzo Maccarinelli, defended his WBO cruiserweight title with a fourth-round knockout of previously unbeaten Mohamed Azzaoui (now 22-1-2). Maccarinelli first hurt Azzaoui with a left to the body in round two and then finished him off with what the BBC called a "massive left hook to the kidney" in round four that caused Azzaoui to be counted out. Tb=he BBC also reported that replays showed that Maccarinelli's coupe de gras was a legal blow. Critics of Enzo Calzaghe may point out that a win over Azzaoui isn't that impressive because he was given less than two weeks notice for this fight, but in addition to Maccarinelli and his son Joe, Enzo Calzaghe also guided the extremely limited Gavin Rees from six rounders to the WBA world title this year-- now that is an accomplishment.
