Eastman tops Dalton in Guyana

The Guyana Boxing Board of Control staged a card last weekend at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana. In the main event, middleweight Howard Eastman beat Denny Dalton by unanimous decision for the Guyana middleweight title. It was a scorcher of a bout, with both fighters barely making it to the end. Eastman credited Dalton for what he described as his toughest opponent to date, even saying that the great Bernard Hopkins could not do to him what Dalton did. Dalton had Eastman cut under his left eye and on wobbly legs for most of the fight, even though Dalton absorbed some big punches from the former champion.

Dalton attacked from the first bell and landed big as Eastman appeared to have taken him too lightly and was out of condition. However Eastman did just as much with precision punches and only survived the fight due to his experience. Eastman rocked Dalton in the tenth round and was the clear winner of the last three rounds as Dalton was in serious trouble. Eastman said afterwards that he is looking for another title shot.

In the chief support, former world champion Pamela "Grenade" London survived the boxing skills of Veronica Blackman to squeeze an eight-round split decision win and claim a regional heavyweight title.

Trinidad-based Joel McRae was on the receiving end for most of his fight with Michael De Mattos but won a split decision over six rounds... Shelly Gibson lost to Andrea Duncan in a female heavyweight four rounder.... Cecil Mmith outpointed Carlton Skeete in the opening four-round bout.
