Don "The Bomb" George in Friday the 13th action

Undefeated super middleweight Donovan “Da Bomb” George, returns to the squared circle on Friday, April 13th. George will be matched up against journeyman Alberto Mercedes. In fact 13 is certainly the theme of the day. Mercedes carries a record of 13-13, into Friday night’s contest, while George will be looking for his 13th win as professional, with a draw also on his record. The Top Rank promoted pugilist, predicts that he will do a number on Mercedes that will make horror film icon Jason Voorhies jealous come this Friday the 13th.

“I’m really excited about Friday, I just can’t wait to out and fight. I love to fight that’s what I do and I’m going to go out there and knock this dude out”, George.

George will be making his second outing of 2007. The last time “Da Bomb” saw action was on February 16th. On that night he destroyed journeyman Kendall Gould. “Da Bomb” needed a mere a minute of the 1st round to dispose of his last victim. George’s highlight reel knockout was in front of a partisan hometown crowd at the Cicero Stadium in his native Illinois. This Friday nights bout will also emanate from the same Chicago venue. “Da Bomb,” says that as always he plans on being a very rude host.

“It’s always great to fight in front of the home crowd. When my music hits the fans go crazy and I get all pumped up. I love that atmosphere; I really feed off their energy. A lot of fighters say they don’t hear the crowd or that they block it out, well I do hear the crowd and I get into it. The crowd makes me fight and when they are into it, I fight even harder,” George.

This fight will be part of the supporting cast on the weekly “Solo Boxeo”, boxing series, which is televised by the Spanish language network Telefutura. There is a chance that George’s bout may appear on television since; he is facing a Hispanic opponent in, Merecedes.

The 22 year old Chicago native is looking to keep his dubious knockout streak alive. However George insists that he is not some headhunting fighter who is looking to stop everyone with every punch. George has won 8 straight via knockout. However this impressive sting of KOs has resulted in a dilemma of lack of rounds. In George’s last 5 bouts dating back to the summer of 2006, he’s amassed 13 rounds of ring experience.

“Well I’m looking to keep the streak going. The last time out it was just a case of me seeing that every time he squared up and threw something he had his chin in the air. So I just jumped on him. This time out we’re looking to get some rounds and I’m going to try to break this guy down and get him out of there by the 4th round. Don’t get me wrong if I see an opening, I’m going to jump on him,” George.

For “Da Bomb,” self esteem is never an issue. George feels he is as talented a fighter as there is in his weight class. George tuned in to Saturday afternoon’s world title match between Joe Calzahage and Peter Manfredo Jr. During this broadcast HBO, posted up a list of “Cant Miss Prospects”, George’s name was not mentioned. George admitted that it bothered him to be left out of the discussion.

“Did I think that I belong on that list? Absolutely! I understand though, that there are politics that go into that sort of thing. Also I’ve yet to be on national TV, so that plays a part too. I’m not worried about it. If anything it only motivates me more. I’ll be champion of the world and when we get there, it’s going to be crazy”, said George.

According to advisor Mike Michael, his fighter is on the brink of breaking through into the upper echelon of the division.

“Donovan is on the cuff of fighting any prospect and beating them. Also not only just win, but win in sensational fashion. Who ever it may be, who ever steps into the ring against “Da Bomb” will get annihilated,” Michael.

Michael says that what impresses him the most about his young protégé is his work ethic. According to George, on Easter Sunday, while many where indulging in food and family on this Holy Day. “Da Bomb” was working out, for 3 hours, on his own, just him and the gym radio.

“To me working and being disciplined comes second nature to me. I have a goal and a dream and I’m not only going to be a world champion, I’m going to be the best,” George.

“From the moment, I met him and sat down with him, he gave me this vibe. He’s got it and he fights like a mutha fucka! His body language, the way he conducts himself he’s the real deal. He’s working on his endurance and technique constantly. We are developing a complete fighter,” Michael.

Michael told Boxingtalk, that things are progressing in getting the “Da Bomb” inside of the living rooms of everyone. Shobox, ESPN, etc. and major cable exposure is inevitable.

“After reading this interview people will realize what this kid is. Friday the 13th, will be bad luck for Alberto Mercedes. Lock the doors and run for cover. Its going to be nuclear explosion and on Friday the 13th its going to be on Mercedes ass”, Michael.
