Did McGregor's loss open the door for Pacquiao-Garcia?

Over the weekend, in UFC 257, Dustin Poirier knocked out Conor McGregor in the second round. Normally Boxingtalk does not cover mixed martial arts, but this result has an effect on the boxing world. Had McGregor won, there was a good chance he would have returned to boxing to fight Manny Pacquiao (pictured). Pacquiao still holds the WBA welterweight title despite 18 months of inactivity). Instead, the defeated McGregor will remain in the UFC. McGregor tweeted after the loss that he intended to pursue a rematch with Poirier: "Thanks for the support everyone! [It] was not my night/morning in there but a great contest to improve on. I’m excited at the blockbuster trilogy I now have on my hands. Dustin is a hell of a competitor and I look forward to going again." With McGregor now off the table as a potential opponent for the 42 year-old Pacquiao, it is now reported that he and Ryan Garcia are in preliminary discussions on a potential bout. Garcia is a 135 pounder and Pacquiao has been at 147 pounds for a while, but it seems like 140 or 142 pounds would be a decent meeting place. For the kind of money that bout would generate for each boxer, such differences could be worked out.

Garcia previously had been talking about fighting Gervonta "Tank" Davis. News of a potential Pacquiao-Garcia fight predictably did not sit well with Garcia's peers. Davis complained, "He about to do an exhibition wit Manny... definitely don’t want the fight no more! I’m on to the next."

To which Devin Haney replied, "For once... we could agree."
