Diaz wins when Freitas quits lightweight battle

Juan Diaz TKO8 Acelino Freitas... In a battle between two talented lightweight title holders, the rich veteran opted out of an action-paced title bout, giving the victory to the younger, hungrier fighter. Acelino Freitas, who has earned millions in his career, gave a good effort for eight rounds, but for the second time in his career, he quit rather than risk further punishment. As always, Diaz was the aggressor, coming forward and applying pressure. He was credited with landing 222 punches to Freitas' 159. Though Diaz was ahead at the time of Freitas' retirement, the fight was not completely one sided, as Freitas had some success digging hook shots into Diaz's body.  Diaz wow holds the WBA and WBO titles, although Joel Casamayor has the more legitimate claim to the 13-pound world championship. Now 32-0, Diaz could find himself in line for a huge fight with Manny Pacquiao, whose habit of signing with multiple promoters has left him alienated from the best fights at 130 pounds. Freitas, now 38-2, also quit in his other loss, to Diego Corrales. He probably should retire with his health, wealth and Brazilian good looks intact. source: hbo boxing after dark
