Nothing has been signed yet, but it looks like David Diaz is the frontrunner to get the much sought after shot at Miguel Cotto for the WBO junior welterweight title in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 24, 2005. The coveted opportunity to appear on the HBO telecast opened up when original opponent Gianluca Branco pulled out with an injury. Diaz is a 1996 Olympic teammate of Fernando Vargas and David Reid whose career has developed at a much slower pace. His pro record is 28-1 with his lone loss coming against Kendall Holt. He is currently rated #20 by Boxingtalk. Among the boxers Diaz was chosen over were Holt, Jeff Resto and Antonio Pitalua. Diaz's promoter has not yet confirmed this report.
