Adrian Diaconu, a transplanted Romanian, won the vacant Canadian light heavyweight championship in Montreal. Diaconu was outboxed in the first two rounds but used his power to knock Conal MacPhee to the canvas in each round. MacPhee sustained a bad cut inside his mouth and decided to go for broke, which made for an exciting fifth round. However, the ringside physician stopped the bout after that round, giving the title to Diaconu, who is now 18-0. On the same show, rising star Lucian Bute won a wild super middleweight affair against Jose Spearman. Bute, now 13-0, knocked Spearman down in the first, and then hit Spearman just after the bell sounded to end the fifth round. Spearman went down and took two minutes to recover. Bute was penalized two points for the infraction and lost a third point the following round for a low blow. In the eighth round, Bute ended it with about 20 unanswered blows that put Spearman down for the ten count.
