Demetrius Hopkins Says Uncle Blocked Him From Getting Signing Bonus

Did B-Hop b-lock his nephew from renewing his contract with Golden Boy? D-Hop thinks so!

Boxingtalk:  Demetrius, what’s the latest with you and your contract with Golden Boy Promotions?

Demetrius Hopkins:  It’s like I told you in the article I did with you.  I was trying to get a contract with Golden Boy Promotions.  My contract was up on Jan 6th, but they gave me a title fight on May 22nd.against Junior Witter.  I was a free agent, and things just weren’t right with the terms.  So, I had to terminate with Golden Boy.  I tried talking with them to work out the contract issues.

BT:  What was it about the terms that you didn’t like?

Demetrius Hopkins:  They said they don’t give out signing bonuses, but they gave Juan Diaz, who lost to Nate Campbell, a signing bonus, and I was really disturbed about that.

BT:  Why do you think they would give Diaz a signing bonus and not you?

Demetrius Hopkins:  I believe my uncle had a lot to do with it since we’re in an argument that’s been going back and forth.  I asked for two things from Golden Boy: a nice contract and a signing bonus, and that’s it.

BT:  How do you feel Bernard got in the way?

Demetrius Hopkins:  I feel he has something to do with it since we’re in a family feud, but right now I’m looking forward to signing with Bob Arum.  I’m going to be signing with Bob Arum.  De La Hoya started with Bob, and that’s where he made his money.

BT:  Have you signed with him yet?

Demetrius Hopkins:  Right now we’re talking and in negotiations.

BT:  Will Bob give you a signing bonus?

Demetrius Hopkins:  Hopefully he will.  We’ve talked about it, and he’s going to get me in the ring.  I want to prove that I’m the best 140-pound fighter out there.  With Junior Witter thinking I ran from him for the May 22nd fight, he’s going to regret the things that came out of this mouth.

BT:  What do you think Bernard will say when he sees this on Boxingtalk?

Demetrius Hopkins:  He should know what a fighter should have and not have. I have thirty professional fights.  I don’t understand it.  I should be further in my career.  I should be a champion and an HBO fighter.  It seems like he wants me to be a 35 or 36 years old getting a title shot just like he was.  It happened to him but why does that have to happen to me.

BT:  When should you expect to sign a contract with Bob Arum and Top Rank?

Demetrius Hopkins:  In a couple weeks.  I’m just staying patient.  You’ll be the first to know though.  We’re looking to fight on HBO and Showtime.  I will be a threat to the 140-pound division.  I have to get myself together.  Get my body in shape, and once I get in that zone, I’m going to be a major threat.  Sometimes I wish my last name wasn’t Hopkins, because there’s so much pressure I wish I was Demetrius Jones.  I want to build my own legacy and my past.

BT:  If you were Demetrius Jones, who would Demetrius Jones pick for this weekend’s fight?

Demetrius Hopkins:  Bernard and I went through a lot, and even though I’m not with Golden Boy, it’s going to be a good fight, and I got to go with my family.

NOTE:  A phone call was placed to Bernard Hopkins after this interview took place.  That message has yet to be returned.
