De Leon, Lazcano, Berto all victorious!

Daniel Ponce De Leon TKO8 Al Seeger... In El Paso, Texas last night on the main event of a Golden Boy pay-per-view show, Daniel Ponce De Leon stopped Al Seeger in the eight round to retain his WBO 122-pound world title. De Leon, known for his knockout power said afterwards, “He was a fast guy.  We were hoping we were going to slow him down and get him.  I knew that eventually I was going to be able to catch him. I had to make my fight and I was able to do that tonight.  I am happy to be a world champion and as for the future, I want to unify the belts and to do that I would have to face [WBA champion Celestino] Cabelleros.” Caballeros is responsible for the only loss on the record of De Leon (29-1) but De Leon wound up winning a world title before Caballeros. Seeger, 27-2, had this to say afterwards: “I feel real bad about tonight. I let myself down and a lot of other people too.  I know I am a better fighter than that.  He was difficult to fight and I could’ve fought a smarter fight tonight too.”   source: Golden Boy Promotions

Juan Lazcano W10 Manuel Ganica... On the same show, junior welterweight contende Juan Lazcano had a surprisingly tough time with what looked to be a tune-up bout against Maneul Garnica.  Lazcano won by split decision and blamed Garnica’s style, saying, “he didn’t come to fight.  I kept telling him, ‘cmon and fight; you don’t have any guts to fight.’  He was a very slippery fighter so it was somewhat difficult to fight him the way I wanted but he didn’t really come to fight.  As far as split decision, I can agree with that because I went in there and delivered and he didn’t.  He really didn’t want to fight.” Garnica was coming off a win against ex-titlist Carlos Maussa, but wasn’t expected to give Lazcano that much competition. He said afterwards, “I think I should have won the fight and the split decision went the wrong way because you could even tell by the crowds reaction.  I gave him a boxing lesson and all he came to do was wrestle with me.  He’s a dirty fighter and I think I won the fight.” source: Golden Boy Promotions

Gerry Penalosa KO9 Mauricio Martinez... Gerry Penalosa, a 115-pound world champion back in the late 90s, got a big win to puthimself in serious title contention as a bantamweight.  Penalosa knocked out Panama’s Maurico Martinez, also a former world titlist, in the ninth round on the El Paso undercard. Penalosa says he paid the price to win:  “I hurt my left hand in the first round when I hit him and he went down.  After I hurt it I was a little scared to throw it with all my power but after a while I just got back in to my fight plan.  I am glad to be here tonight and with the same promoter as my stablemate Manny Paquaio.” source: Golden Boy Promotions

Andre Bero TKO5 James Crayton… Welterweight prospect Andre Berto stopped veteran James Crayton, 34-23-2, in the fifth round. Berto appears headed for an HBO appearance in December, but he wasn’t completely satisfied with his performance: “I didn’t feel too well tonight, a bit groggy.  Originally I was suppose to fight on the 14th and then it got moved and my training camp was extended to the longest it has been.  I give myself a five.  But I was happy to get the fight.  People expect me to go in and blow out my opponent. I’m glad I got the work and to stop a real veteran in Crayton, who has only been knocked out two times in his career, feels good.” Crayton should probably consider retirement now. source: Golden Boy Promotions
