David Carey wins monthly amateur award

Press Release: Heavyweight David Carey of Anchorage, Alaska has been named USA Boxing’s athlete of the month for January. Carey recorded an impressive victory in the USA vs. Mexico Dual, January 18th in San Diego, Calif. The 6-foot-5-inch heavyweight pounded out a convincing 27-16 decision over Mexican Olympian Javier Torres in the opening event of 2008. Carey enjoyed a six point lead as the final round began, but continued to pour on the points over the final two minutes to claim the victory. Carey began boxing in 2003 after taking a trip to King’s Gym in Oakland, Calif. Carey has enjoyed success at the national level over the past three years despite having to travel from Anchorage, Alaska to Washington state often for competitions and training. The father of two works as a Life Skills Coach in Anchorage.
