Darchinyan overpowers Maldonado

Vic Darchinyan TKO8 Luis Maldonado... Showing punching power rarely seen in the 112-pound category, Vic Darchinyan made the most of a rare flyweight main event by stopping Luis Maldonado in the eighth round in Las Vegas on Saturday. Darchinyan-Maldonado was thrust into the spotlight when Jose Luis Castillo failed to make weight for a lightweight championship bout and Diego Corrales elected to cancel the original main event. Darchinyan dropped the previously unbeaten Maldonado in the sixth round of a fast-paced bout and continued punishing him until referee Joe Cortez stepped in. Darchinyan, a 2000 Olympian who is now 25-0 as a professional, continues to hold the IBF and IBO flyweight titles. He sincerely wants to unify the belts in one of boxing's deepest divisions against men like Pongsaklek Wongjongkam, Lorenzo Parra and Jorge Arce, all of whom hold some type of flyweight title. Its a shame the other sanctioning bodies will never permit it. source: ShowtimeÂ
