Danny Williams in shocking withdrawal!

According to the BBC, Danny Williams has pulled out of a British heavyweight championship bout approximately 24 hours before the opening bell. Although he was the challenger for Matt Skelton's British title, Skelton's crude skills and Williams' 2004 win over Mike Tyson made Williams the favorite to claim the domestic crown. But he was a no-show for Thursday's press conference and then, at Friday's weigh-in, he tipped the beam at a career-high 283 pounds. By comparison, he weighed 265 when he stopped Tyson about a year ago.  Williams was examined by a physician at the weigh-in, but his wife called promoter Frank Warren a few hours later with a claim that Williams had the flu all week.  An upset Warren fumed a peculiarly British expression, "I believe the real reason is his bottle has gone." Stepping in to save the title fight is Mark Krence, 21-3, who lost a title eliminater to Scott Gammer two months ago. Still, under dire straits, Warren has found an acceptable replacement for the undefeated Skelton. -Scott Shaffer
