Danny Jacobs loses on tiebreaker at Olympic Trials

Middleweight:  Shawn Estrada over Daniel Jacobs, 13-13 (33-23)…  The first two rounds were fought at a methodical pace without many punches landing.  Shawn Estrada stood in the center and Danny Jacobs circled looking for openings.  Then things turned crazy.  Estrada left his corner to start the third round without his mouthpiece.  His corner apparently entered the ring to gain the referee’s attention which seemingly called for an immediate disqualification. Jacobs' corner then entered the ring and removed his headgear. The referee then sent Estrada to get his rinsed mouthpiece back in and, after having Jacobs put his headgear back on, signaled for the action to continue.  Estrada then fouled by pushing his fist under up under Jacobs chin and pushing him to the ropes.  Then Estrada lost his mouthpiece and was docked a point.  After that the bout turned into a brawl with gloves and elbows flying in all directions.  With a clear sense of urgency, Jacobs landed some clean blows at the end of the bout to pull even in the scoring, but he lost 33-23 on the total punch count tie-breaker.  The confusing incident and referee’s unclear judgments and lack of controlling the situation resulted in a grievance being filed and hearing being held after tonight’s bouts are completed.  The loser of this bout faces the winner of tomorrow's match between Dominic Wade and Shawn Porter.
