Survives two knockdowns and closed eye to win TKO10
07/05/2005
In one of the most astonishingly brutal masterpieces you'd ever want to see, Diego Corrales got up from two tenth round knockdowns and battered Jose Luis Castillo until Castillo was out on his feet, leading referee Tony Weeks to end the world lightweight championship bout by technical knockout in Corrales' favor. Corrales was in dire straits right up until the final sequence that ended the contest. His left eye was virtually closed, his right eye was a little swollen and Weeks had deducted a point because for deliberately taking his mouthpiece out after the second trip to the canvas. Corrales barely beat the count, but immediately went to war. Castillo had never been knocked down in his long career, and he didn't go down tonight either despite absorbing a tremendous amount of punishment. After the fight, he admitted he was hurt at the end, but said he thought Weeks should have given him a chance to recover. Early on, it looked like Corrales made the mistake of hooking with a hooker, but through sheer guts, he made the strategy pay off. Beginning in the second round, the bout was fought forehead to forehead, all power punches with few clinches. In the fifth, Castillo suffered a pretty bad cut over his left eye and referee Tony Weeks ruled it was caused by an accidental clash of heads. The action remained intense into the sixth, when Castillo appeared to stagger Corrales at the bell. Corrales fought with a sense of urgency in the seventh as his eye began to close and he hurt Castillo pretty badly as the seventh ended. The eighth was an incredible round as Corrales got his mouthpiece knocked out but he staggered Castillo before there was any lull in the action. It was probably the best round of the year, a distinction that would only last until the tenth round. Through the ninth round, Corrales lead on two of the three official scorecards and trailed on the third. After each of the knockouts, Corrales did a very smart thing. He removed his mouth piece, gaining him precious seconds to recover. With the win, Corrales unifies the WBO and WBC lightweight titles and gains recognition by Boxingtalk and everyone else except the WBA and IBF as the true lightweight champion of the world. It goes without saying a rematch would be welcomed by anyone privileged to see tonight's all-time classic -Scott Shaffer
