D.C. boxing commissioner Michael Brown fired

Washington D.C.'s Boxing and Wrestling Commissioner Michael Brown worked hard to bring the upcoming Mike Tyson-Kevin McBride bout to his town. Washington D.C. does not usually attract big fights, so it seems like Brown did his job well. And the revenues generated by the event could help the local economy. So what was Brown's reward? A pink slip from his boss, D.C. mayor Anthony Williams.  According to the Washington Post, Mayor Williams announced that Brown's appointment was over effective immediately.  By handling the dismissal this way, Williams made it probable Brown will be off the job by the time the fight he helped set up rolls around on June 11, 2005. The move appears to smack of cheap politics: Brown is considering running for mayor against Williams in 2006.  Once again, boxing suffers from political gamesmanship. --Scott Shaffer
