Fidel Castro has stated that he might possibly withhold the Cuban boxing team from taking part in the World Championships and the Olympic Games for fear of additional defections from communist Cuba. The possible no shows are a direct response to the two boxers who attempted to defect during the Pan Am games in Brazil.   The attempt failed when Guillermo Rigondeaux, two-time Olympic bantamweight champion, and Erislandy Lara, an amateur welterweight world champion, were arrested in Brazil when their visas expired. While their families were put under house arrest, the two boxers were subsequently sent back to Cuba and face punishment. The World Championships are being held in the U.S. and the Olympics Games will be held in Beijing in 2008. Whether or not this will affect other Cuban athletic teams from performing in international games is unknown. As well, this raises the question of how different boxing will become once the long time Cuban dictator has passed.   Â
