Colbert tops Corrales for WBA trinket

Chris Colbert W12 Jezzrel Corrales... Junior lightweight Chris Colbert (14-0) captured the interim WBA title with a one-sided victory over Panama's Jezzrel Corrales (22-4). It was a tactical boxing match from the opening bell, Colbert (14-0 with 5 KOs) fought like a pugilist who knew he had plenty of time to operate while Corrales, a former WBA champion, used every veteran trick in the book to make it to the final bell. Corrales' brightest moment came in round four when he appeared to buzz Colbert with a left hand. The talented New Yorker was able to mask how badly he was hurt incredibly well. He would finish the round and continue to operate. Official scores were 116-111 and 117-110 (twice). Boxingtalk scored it 117-110 for Colbert. It was a good win for Colbert but the WBA interim title he acquired is a paper title behind WBA belts that belong to Leo Santa Cruz and Rene Alvarado. Why Corrales, who was coming off a loss, was given the chance to fight for a vacant title is unjustifiable. Source: Fox
