Closed eye spells loss for Vargas

Shane Mosley TKO10 Fernando Vargas... Shane Mosley showed he still has the Sugar, scoring his first knockout win in over four years against Fernando Vargas in Las Vegas on Saturday.  Mosley's speed and boxing skills may not have been what they were a few years ago, but they were very close, and his tenth-round stoppage of a one-eyed Vargas was the best he's looked since 2001 when he was considered one of the top fighter in the world.  Mosley won the first three rounds, during which Vargas' his left eye began to swell from Mosley's repeated right hands.  Vargas put the pressure on Mosley for rounds four through six as they went back and forth for a while.  Around the seventh or eight round, Vargas' eye became completely shut, allowing Mosley to tee off with more right hands. Vargas was never close to going down but referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight in round ten when Mosley landed a combination.  Afterwards, Vargas complained about the stoppage despite a horrendous looking eye. Mosley clearly landed the more effective punches throughout the fight and Vargas did seem frozen a few times when Mosley put his combinations together.  With the win Mosley improves to 42-4 with 36 KOs while Vargas loses his third fight, all by stoppage and falls to 26-3 with 22 KOs.  Vargas has now been stopped in rounds 12, 11, and 10, as Mosley has the quickest stoppage over Vargas, just ahead of Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya. source: HBO PPV
