Chris Byrd speaks on potential fight with Brock and more

GL: What's the latest and greatest Chris? "Nothing much man. Just waiting to see what's next. I'm hearing Calvin Brock and I'm hoping we can make it happen. I think it would be an interesting fight between two of the best guys out there without a title and the winner would deserve another shot at the title."

GL: I've been hearing the fight could take place as an IBF eliminator.

CB: "I've been hearing the same thing and I hope it happens. Calvin is solid. He can fight really good and I'm always looking forward to major challenges and Calvin is most definitely a major challenge. I respect him. He's a good dude, but you know this boxing, it's all business. But I think it would be a great fight for the fans."

GL: Although a fight with Brock would take place for the number one ranking, Klitschko just made the mandatory with Lamon so his mandatory won't be due for another year. How do you feel about that?

CB: "I don't know what's going to happen. If I'm victorious, we can work out certain things I guess. I don't really care about that. I just care about fighting Calvin Brock and then after that whatever happens, happens."

GL: You said the fight with Brock would be competitive. How does a fight between the two of you play out?

CB: "Calvin, like I tell people, he always finds a way to win. He knows what he's doing in the ring, he's good on his feet and he can punch. He's a good fighter and I can't disrespect him at all. He knows what he's doing and he's got a lot of amatuer experience that really helps him in fights. I think it would be a really clean boxing match, I don't think it will be tactical at all."

GL: How do you feel about the heavyweight unification bout between Ibragimov and Chagaev?

CB: "It's about time. Somebody had to do it. It's a good thing. Any type of unification is good, because then you can narrow it down to one. But in boxing with the mandatories being due it's hard to unify all of them."

GL: Do you think the winner of that fight should be considered the best heavyweight in the world?

CB: "Oh heavens no. What for? Because of the unification? Who cares? Everybody knows that Wladimir Klitschko is the number one guy now. Who has really Ibragimov fought? He had a draw with a Ray Austin. Chagaev, who did he fight, the giant that was built up as a freak show? They're both good fighters, but it's a lot of hype. These guys fought nobody to become champion and now that they're fighting each other it's great that they're unifying but that doesn't mean they should be considered the number one guy overall. Please. Fight some credible guys who will give you a challenge. Guys that are known for fighting back, on their way up none of those guys fought anybody so how did they get into the number one spot? It used to be a privilege to fight for the title. If you're going to get into an elimination type deal, tournament style where you have the top four guys fighting each other, you'll have a worthy number one contender. But nowadays guys can fight anybody to get their shot."

GL: Is that a way of you saying that people should focus on the fact that a fight between you and Brock would be two of the best guys out there without a title fighting for the right to face Klitschko again as opposed to the 'who wants to the see the winner of that fight Klitschko?'

CB: "We both lost to Klitschko, but we both deserved our positions. I fought real dudes to become the number one contender and then I fought Holyfield for the title when Lennox Lewis didn't want to fight. It was a hard road for me and Calvin earned his shot. But now guys don't have to fight anybody and they're getting shots. They never fought anybody in the top ten and they're in eliminators. They say the heavyweight division is weak, well force these guys to fight real contenders to earn their shots, stop just giving it to them by allowing them to slip in the position. That's why a lot of people in the general public don't know these fighters, because they're not fighting nobody before they fight for the title. C'mon. You got Ibragimov, and I take nothing away from him, he beat Shannon Briggs. Good. But two fights before that he had a draw with Ray Austin who looked like an amatuer against Wladimir Klitschko and now he can call himself the best heavyweight in the world because he won a unification fight? I would be ashamed to call myself that. I would be ashamed to call myself a top five heavyweight. If you look at it, he had a draw with Ray Austin. If I had a draw with Ray Austin, I would have been done. If we're going to be honest in boxing we need to have guys fight for their shot. That's why guys like myself, Holyfield and anybody over 35 feels they still have a shot to win the title because none of the younger guys are dominant. I look at Wladimir Klitschko as a pretty dominant champion right now but the rest of the guys are just alright. In all honesty, the next best guy in the division is Samuel Peter, and that's even without a title. He's the most dangerous guy out there, he can crack."

GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?

CB: "I'm still hanging in there and I'm looking to win a world title again. That's my goal so look out. I'm telling you when you see me fighting from now on, I'm going to be having fun with it for every second of every round."
