Cherry Bomb returns in ESPN main event!

NABA and WBC CABOFE Lightweight Champion Edner "Cherry Bomb" Cherry (19-4-2, 8 KOs) returns to action on May 12, 2006 to take on undefeated Lightweight prospect Monty Meza-Clay (20-0, 13 KOs) in the main event of ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights" at the A La Carte Event Pavilion in Tampa, Florida. Cherry was last seen loosing a controversial decision to NABF Lightweight Champion Jose Armando Cruz on February 4th on Showtime in the co-featured bout to Jose Luis Castillo vs. Rolando Reyes. Cherry dropped Santa Cruz in the third round and had the champion in trouble in the eighth and eleventh rounds of the fight. While the judges had Santa Cruz winning, many ringside observers including the press row judges used for the Showtime telecast favored Cherry in the fight. Cherry will look to re-establish himself as an elite lightweight contender against the undefeated Meza-Clay. Monty Meza-Clay is the IBA Super Featherweight Champion after an impressive decision win over veteran Shamir Reyes in one of his last outings. Clay is widely regarded as a promising young boxer and is trained by Heavyweight Brian Minto's trainer Tom Yankello. Clay looks to capatilize on this opportunity and upset the champion Cherry on May 12th.

The co-featured bout will be Billy Lyell (11-2, 2 KOs) taking on veteran Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor (10-8-2, 5 KOs). Lyell, from Warren, OH, is known for his aggressive style and high activity levels. He is coming off the most impressive win of his career with an eight round unanimous decision over Robert Dula. Clarence Taylor aka "Sonny Bono" from Wilmington, Deleware is coming off a huge upset when he knocked out former IBF Latino Light Welterweight Champion Luis Alberto Santiago in one round. Taylor looks for one more upset and Lyell will look to establish himself as a force in the Jr. Middleweight division.

The undercard will feature two very intriguing matchups. In an all Florida Jr. Middleweight bout undefeated prospect Felix Cepeda (7-0, 4 KOs) steps up in competition against the toughest test in his career when he faces the power punching Jerome Ellis (9-4-1, 8 KOs). In a Jr. Featherweight bout Jacksonville, FL native Robert Daluz (7-2, 6 KOs) takes on undefeated prospect Sergio Medez (3-0, 1 KO) from California. Also featured in action will be local favorites Light Heavyweight Adam Jaco and Jr. Lightweight Kermit Gonzalez.
