Charly Suarez deserves a world title shot

Charly Suarez KO1 Manuel Avila… Charly Suarez (19-0, 11 KOs) knocked out Manuel Avila (26-4-1, 9 KOs) at 2:31 of the opening round Saturday night at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California. The Filipino junior lightweight, who entered the bout as the WBO's #1 contender after nearly fourteen months out of the ring, dominated from the opening bell before ending the contest with a crushing right hand. Following the victory, Suarez and his promoter Sampson Lewkowicz called on the WBO to enforce its previous order directing unified WBO and IBF junior lightweight champion Emanuel Navarrete to begin negotiations for a rematch.

Suarez and Navarrete first met in May 2025. The bout was initially ruled a technical decision victory for Navarrete after it was stopped in the eighth round because of a cut over the champion's left eye that officials believed resulted from an accidental clash of heads. The California State Athletic Commission later reviewed video and determined the cut had been caused by a punch. The official result was changed to a no contest, and the WBO subsequently ordered a rematch. Before that rematch could take place, Navarrete unified the WBO title by stopping then-IBF champion Eduardo Nunez in the eleventh round.
