Chagaev, Petkovic victorious in Germany

The Hamburg based Spotlight Boxing promotion likes to treat new paths and do things a bit differently than most others: This time it was the first professional boxing event at the German North Sea coast. In Cuxhaven, a popular German seaside resort, about 800 spectators witnessed the before last Spotlight show of an eventful and busy year 2004. Three of the ten contests on the fightcard were broadcast live and all over Europe on Eurosport TV at 21:30 (CET).

In the main event Uzbekian heavyweight contender Ruslan Chagaev once again lived up to his nickname “White Tyson” when he punished his Croatian opponent Asmir Vojnovic over four rounds until his cornermen threw in the towel. The Universum promoted fighter Chagaev improved his record to 14-0-1 with 12 knockouts. Vojnovic, ending the fight on unsteady legs and bleeding heavily from the mouth, dropped to 22-6-1 with 12 knockouts.

Highly talented heavyweight prospect Denis Boytsov apparantly profit from the fresh sea air in Cuxhaven as well and delivered another early victory. The 18-year-old Russian bombed his opponent Aleh Dubiaha into submission with 31 seconds left in the opening round. The athletic and explosive Boytsov is now 3-0, all by knockout.

In another interesting undercard fight evasive and stilistic super middleweight contender Dimitri Sartison upped his unbeaten record to 10-0 (6) with a technical knockout victory over Polish Andrzej Butowicz.

Amateur world champion Willy Blain made a successful professional debut in Cuxhaven. The Frenchman from the Indian Ocean beat his Spanish opponent Francisco Jose Babiano Gomez by majority decision over four rounds after suffering a knockdown in round two.

Hamburg based cruiserweight contender Alexander Petkovic defeated Czech heavyweight champion Robert Sulgan with an uneventful unanimous decision (77:75, 80:72, 80:72) over eight rounds. For Petkovic, now 30-2-3 (15), it was the second straight victory after suffering his first professional losses in two consecutive bouts, one of them a unanimous decision loss in a WBO title challenge against Johnny Nelson.

The most exciting knockout of the evening was executed by super lightweight contender Ali Ahraoui, now 4-0 (1), who stopped his Slovakian opponent Pavol Durdik with a hook to the liver in round 3.

The last Spotlight Boxing event will take place on December 14 in Sölden, Austria. Boxing.de will broadcast several exciting fights from this show on the internet beginning 18:00 (CET).
