Celestino Caballero edges Jorge Lacierva

Celestino Caballero retained the WBA version of the 122-pound championship with a unanimous decision over Jorge Lacierva in Hidalgo, Texas. The official scores were a far too wide 115-112, 116-110 and 116-111. In reality, Caballero barely deserved the decision despite a huge size and reach advantage. The ShoBox panel of boxing writers all informally scored it 114-113 for Caballero, who deserves credit for a strong rally in the late rounds.  Lacierva, 32-7-6, seemed to be finished as a top-shelf fighter back in 2005, but several wins since then and tonight's strong perfomance shows he still has gas left in the tank. Caballero, 27-2, was probably hoping he was next in line for the Vazquez-Marquez winner, but he will probably have to wait for that fight in light of the tremendous pressure there will surely be for Vazquez-Marquez III. One word about the canvas, there were about a zillion promoter logos painted on the floor, and it caused the boxers to constantly slip. There's nothing wrong with making a few bucks by selling ad space to sponsors, but when promoters' logos start affecting the footing of the boxers, they need to be scaled back.  source: Showtime Championship Boxing
